Many have been the occasions when my
customers decided to change their old websites for new ones. But instead of
doing good for them they end up irreparably harming their online presence. Here
are a few common mistakes:
1. Don't ever change your website to
an "Under Construction" while your new website is on the works.
For every hour you
do that, you lose a link. For every minute your screen shows nothing, and
search engine robots visit your website, you loose Search Engine Positioning.
By the time your website is ready maybe after a few weeks and you upload the
new one, you will notice the hits to your website will reduce to 70% of what
you had before the facelift.
2. Don't change filenames
The real reference Search Engines
have of your website other than the
domain name and index are a few content pages and their addresses. When you
change their names you go back to zero "0". Search engines robots
will have to crawl from the beginning. The broken links from your old website
will only mislead your visitors.
3. Don’t Change your domain name
suddenly and disappear the old one
Many people decide to change their domain name after a few years for a
shorter one or more attractive one. In general this is a not very good idea.
Search Engines have identified your website because of your domain name and
changing in suddenly will only vanish you from the internet temporarily. If you
do so, because your company changed name, always keep your old domain name and
hopefully your old website to re direct visitors to your new website.
